SHUTTERCLANK!

Bill Daniel – Tri-X Noise

Over the past year, I've been fortunate to befriend and collaborate with Bill Daniel. Bill has done pretty much everything I've ever wanted to do. Seriously. He's published zines. He's made films. He's been in dank basements watching my favorite punk bands play their earliest shows. He's tracked down the most famous hobo boxcar artist; Lived in amazing cities all over the United States; Has been featured in major art exhibits at the MOCA.... ...breath... And to top it all off, he's also won a Guggenheim. I'm not exaggerating. He has literally done all of those things. Needless to say,...

As things develop

I can't believe it's been nearly two months since the opening reception for "Between Day Jobs and Hangovers". It really feels like it was just last week that we were hanging the show, and getting everything ready. Being that the our show was held at UnSmoke ArtSpace in Braddock, PA; We were fortunate to share the opening reception with Morgan Spurlock's "A Day in the Life of John Fetterman". Since then, I've been trying to keep in touch with some good friends that I've made through shutterclank!. Guys like Boogie. Not only is he an amazing photographer, he's been really encouraging from the start....

Between Day Jobs and Hangovers – Recap.

This past Saturday (April 7th), was the opening reception / Shutterclank! issue #3 release party at UnSmoke Artspace, and it was killer. I was really taken back by the amount of people who visited the gallery; and very grateful for support that was given to us through out the night. None of this would be possible if it wasn't for the encouragement and help Shutterclank! has received along the way; which is something I think about every day. Shutterclank! isn't a large operation at all. It's run out of a tiny room here in Pittsburgh. I've got boxes of zines stacked on the floor. Prints resting...

RSVP – OneGiantArm

Last week we received a copy of RSVP from our friends at One Giant Arm. This is zine is rad. Seriously, I've been flipping through the pages over and over again since last week. These dudes killed it. The layout, content, paper and image quality are really remarkable. You should definitely head over to their site, and pick up a copy before they're gone. Limited print of 60. I've said this before, and I'll say it again. Making a photo zine is a work of passion. It's a project that will take a lot of your time and money. However, for every minute or dollar you throw into the project, you're rewarded...

Sometimes someone answers back

Yesterday evening I receive the photo you see above. The woman in the photo, is our new friend Mahsa. She's a photographer and a really nice person. That little gesture, really put things into perspective for me. Let's face it, starting a new project can be nerve wracking. You willingly sacrifice your money and time. You re-prioritize your life. You revaluate and reflect upon past decisions. And no matter how confident you may be, you're a liar if say you don't spend a little bit of time wondering how you'll be received. Wondering if you'll just be yelling into the wind, talking to yourself. Shutterclank!...

toothy

ribs

im a paper girl; through and through. i work with books, i print on paper, i write letters (mostly to chris) and seal the envelopes with a wax seal, i collect works of art on paper, and i still read the new york times in paper form. but ive recently acquired a very expensive paper habit, and it has nothing to do with handmade japanese paper. it is Ilford’s Multigrade Art paper. i recently used it at our “Innocence Lost” show in Brooklyn to display small abstract nudes, and the paper looks exquisite. it is 100% cotton rag, so it cannot hold up to the usual hour long wash after processing,...

One Giant Arm

If you haven't heard about One Giant Arm, you need to move the boulder away from the entrance to the cave you live in. I'm not kidding. You're slipping. These guys are running a really awesome blog. Since I found out about One Giant Arm, I've been hitting up their site on the regular to check out the up and coming photographers and artists they write about. You can tell these guys are really sincere in their appreciation for photography. Running a photo / art blog is a work of passion. It's not some cheap gimmick to generate money or 15 minutes of fame. Their dedication to the medium of photography...

Symbol by Dave King

Goteblüd is currently hosting a show of epic proportions. Symbol by Dave King. But why is a show in a super awesome vintage zine store so influential? Well. Let’s take a little look at what is going on here. Shutterclank! makes a photography zine, and is proud to share their second issue available here. We are steeped in the DIY ethic, creating, organizing, stickering, printing, shooting, film, and so on. We came up listening to killer punk like Crass, hearing about their social activism and emulating them. The creative fire to question. To fight. Against odds and for what you think...

water matters

it may seem a bit jejune, but i think water is not talked about enough in photography. as film photographers, we are so picky about the film we shoot, developers, fixing methods, rinsing techniques- but it can all be for naught if using impure water. tap water can have all sorts of minerals and disinfectants or old pipes can leak rust; the best chemicals and most adroit methods of processing will not impact the finished product if the water is not pure. beginning with developing the film to printing the image, distilled water is the best stuff around to use. how it works is such: regular untreated...
